We started this project with a simple brief: to design a space that accommodates the entire storage needs of a family of five, including the parents, the client, and their 10-year-old child. This 2 BHK apartment needed to fulfil the requirements of all family members while also providing a welcoming area for guests.
Our inspiration stemmed from the visual softness that arches bring, particularly in the matchbox structures of Mumbai. We aimed to incorporate this softness into the space, creating a more dynamic and visually appealing environment.
The living room features three sage green arches that introduce a nature-inspired aesthetic. The TV unit is adorned with soft-textured, marble-printed tiles, providing a tactile contrast to the existing glossy flooring. This combination creates a green oasis within the space, enhanced by architectural arches, abundant green plants, and complementary prints.
To add a playful element, we included a swing instead of an armchair. The living and dining areas cater to everyone’s needs: a large sectional sofa that converts into a bed, a swing for the 10-year-old, and a dining area with banquette seating to accommodate additional guests. The sideboard in the living room houses a Pichwai painting of Shrinathji, a cherished family heirloom.
Given the typical Mumbai suburban view of buildings from every window, we created a sense of a visual nature oasis using nature-inspired wallpaper depicting the misty forests of Panna National Park. To add a touch of luxury, we used pearl finish laminate for visual contrast, accented with hints of gold in the hardware.
The parents’ bedroom features nature-inspired colour tones that respect their age and provide a sense of visual calmness. A blue wall behind the bed, which doubles as a sliding service door, also functions as a large mirror, amplifying the space. Additional taupe tones make the room feel warm and grounded. We intentionally avoided wooden tones, which can become visually heavy over time. Instead, we used nature-inspired solid tones with flat textures that feel earthy, bringing a sense of timelessness and maintaining visual interest.
The best room have something to say about the people who live in them
